Women Finish Regular Season Undefeated
This past Saturday, the SMRC Women defeated Tempe 46-5 and locked in their first place seed going into playoffs on May 9th.
Tempe matched up well in the first half, but the ‘Phins ability to capitalize on turnovers proved to be too much for them. Santa Monica scored off turnovers forced by their forwards and quick phase play twice in the first half with a try by Alex Walker (conversion good), followed by a try by Jacki Bercovici 10 minutes later (12-0). SM then scored again off a penalty, once again touched down by Walker (conversion good, 19-0). Tempe answered before the end of the half with a try scored after missed tackles by the ‘Phins and the half ended 19-5.
The second half of the match featured some fantastic hands by the Dolphin backs. The first 10 minutes of half showcased a try by Whitney Vance off a kickoff caught by Lucy Tin, who then followed up with her own try (Bercovici conversion good). Vance then scored her second try of the game off a spectacular backhanded pass from Bercovici, bringing the score to 36-5. The latter half of the second half saw far too much time in the ‘Phins own half, but Vance was able to capitalize twice more off two set plays controlled by the ‘Phin forwards for a total of 4 tries in the game. The final score was 46-5.
Santa Monica will host Belmont Shore as the top seed in the 1 v. 2 playoff game on Saturday, May 9th for the Southern CA title and bid to Nationals in San Francisco.
