SANTA MONICA RUGBY CLUB HIRES SCOTT MURRAY AS FORWARDS COACH
Santa Monica Rugby Club is extremely pleased to announce that Scottish international rugby legend Scott Murray will be joining the Club as our new forwards coach.
“I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work alongside Riaz and help coach Santa Monica Rugby Club. It is a privilege to work with such a devoted and talented group of players and staff, and also being part of a supportive and forward thinking community. Riaz’s commitment and foresight for the club are exciting, and I couldn’t be happier to be a part of Santa Monica Rugby and see where the next season takes us,” said Scott Murray.
Scott was a true superstar at the highest level of the game winning 87 caps for Scotland. Scott was voted Scottish Player Of The Year three times, played in three Rugby World Cups, 57 European Cup games and won British and Irish Lions selections for the 2001 Lions tour of Australia. He has had a phenomenal rugby career!
After finishing the 2012 season with Top 14 French club, Stade Montois, Scott joined their coaching staff and was soon bitten by the coaching bug. He then moved on to coach French club ASF Fleurance as well as coaching Scotland A to their victory over England A. After moving to the U.S in 2015 with his wife, Scott immediately teamed up with former Bedford teammate Scott Stewart to coach the UCLA rugby college program.
Santa Monica was fortunate to have Scott guest coach a number of sessions during the 2017 season, where Santa Monica went 8 and 2 in the regular season.
“To say that I’m excited to be working with Scott Murray is a massive understatement, he brings a level of knowledge and experience that most pro clubs in Europe would pay top dollar to have. All the players responded extremely well to the handful of sessions Scott took this season and we’re all very excited to have him join our coaching staff,” said head coach Riaz Fredericks.
