SMRC Takes Down Houston
The SMRC Women defeated Houston 45-29, taking their place in the Final Four.
The first half featured exchanged tries by both teams, with SMRC striking in the first two minutes when Jacki Bercovici touched down a try off a penalty (5-0). Houston responded with their own, and SMRC’s Alex Walker came back to take the upper hand again (Bercovici conversion good, 12-5). Houston capitalized on SMRC’s small mistakes though and answered with another try (12-10). SMRC then pulled off a textbook play off a scrum, ending with Lucy Tin touching down a try (conversion good, 19-10). However, Houston would not stay down and took advantage of SMRC errors and ended the half with two tries. The half ended with SMRC down 19-24.
SMRC came back into the second half strong and made statement by scoring two tries within the first 7 minutes – one by Bercovici and then by 8-man Jacque Davisson (conversions good, 33-24). Houston fought to stay in the game, scoring a try (33-29). Undeterred, SMRC put the final nails in the coffin with breakaway tries by April Rodriguez (conversion good, 40-29) and Becky Hearn (45-29).
The ‘Phins face Seattle tomorrow (Sunday) at 1:15 pm PST for a spot in the National Championship game.
