Santa Monica ties to Cal Rugby
Since it’s founding in 1972 by alumni of UCLA rugby, USC rugby, and St. Mary’s University rugby teams, Santa Monica Rugby has been the home of numerous players from Cal Rugby. Cal rugby (University of California, Berkeley) has a distinctive rugby history spanning over 130 years, and serving as one of the West Coast’s finest examples of sporting excellence during that time.
Cal rugby has won 26 of the possible 32 collegiate national championships played in the United States since 1980 and is a “no-cut” team that fields a full three sides each season. Many believe Cal rugby’s success stems from a commitment to fundamentally sound, “no-frills” rugby, that when executed becomes extremely difficult to defeat.
