SMRC Sweep ICEF
In the second week of league play, the Santa Monica U18 boys recorded another resounding win, defeating ICEF 50-12 in the annual “Buddha Bowl,” named after ICEF founder and SMRC Old Boy Mike Piscal. Santa Monica opened with two quick tries by maintaining ball possession and gaining quick ball from the breakdown. ICEF were unable to meet the controlled aggression and power of the composed Dolphin pack. Santa Monica took advantage of a wealth of possession and a well-functioning lineout to exploit space out wide.
Down 38-0 going into the second half, ICEF forwards showed grit and determination and after a series of penalties against Santa Monica, scored two tries and one conversion. Dolphin scores came from a hat-trick by loosehead prop Benny Gonda, two tries from spritely flanker Tom Heaney, and one each from center Joseph Epko, Number 8 Conor Lydon, and Ian Jost. Flyhalf Alex Walsh kicked five conversions. Mention should also go to center Parker Lynch, hooker Willy Hock who was at the forefront on every attacking play, and scrumhalf Evan Clark who constantly put the ICEF on the back foot with clever box kicks.
