Fighting Kelp Fall to Eagle Rock
The Fighting Kelp traveled to Burbank to play Eagle Rock this weekend. With 7 Kelp players out due to injuries, work and being called up to play for the Barracudas, the reserves had to step up and start. A call was put out the old boys to fill in the gaps. Clint Davis, Steve Johnson, Padraig Cremin and Coach Robert Kremer all answered the call and so did not-so-old boys Justin Weiss, Elijah Daley, and Jeff Aster. However, it wasn’t enough. The Kelp came out flat footed, waiting for Eagle Rock to attack as they repeatedly ran through the defense. The Kelp played most of the day on defense with the back 3 being out numbered most of the day as Eagle Rock scored 4 tries in the first half and 3 in the second. The Kelp woke up late in the first half playing a more physical game, winning rucks and being wining striking distance of the try line several times, but unable to get the ball over. Jeff Aster led the backs in the second half and dotted through the line several times. Elijah was there for the offload and crossed the try line, but ran out the back attempting to center the ball. With time almost out, Santa Monica returned the ball from the 22 kick with Jeff braking the line again, this time it was Nate Hall who took the offload and scored the only SMRC try of the day.
The Kelp travel to San Diego next week to play Armada.
More players will be needed to take a full squad. If any old boys want to get some playing time in, get yourself CIPP’d and dust off your boots.
